From the Superintendent

Our Superintendent has asked that I invite you to one of the three upcoming Natomas Unified community meetings that he is hosting. The meetings have three objectives: to provide you with a brief update on the district, an update on the district’s finances and to solicit your input on budget priorities for the 2013-2014 budget. He hopes you will be able to join him on one of these evenings.

The first meeting is this Thursday January 17th, 6:00 p.m. It will be held at Witter Ranch Elementary in the multi-purpose room.

The other two meetings are on January 29th, 6:00 p.m., at Inderkum High School in the school’s theater, and January 31st, 6:00 p.m., at Natomas High School.

2nd Semester is here!

Welcome back!

We had a great first semester to mark the opening of LGA. We are thrilled at the accomplishments our students have made, and have witnessed progress throughout the student body during the first semester.

We want to thank all of the families that came to our first ever Winter Exhibition which showcased some of the work our 7th and 8th grade students have completed. It was a fun night of celebration, where students dressed professionally, presented and discussed what they had learned in their classes, and were able to simply show off their work.

We will continue to grow this event every semester and look forward to seeing you again!

School begins on Monday, January 7th. The first week of school, students will be involved in several assemblies. Each day, students will be released at the regular time.

Monday-Students will spend time reviewing expectations for the academic environment in a fun and engaging format during a 45-minute assembly.
Tuesday-Students will receive recognition and awards for their first semester accomplishments in a 45-minute assembly.
Wednesday-students will participate in another fitness day. The first 40 minutes of school will be spent as a student body with staff engaging in fun fitness activities to get our day started off on an energetic foot!
Thursday-Students will be participating in an assembly with an organization that promotes student excellence (academically and personally). Students will be in a 45-minute assembly.
Friday-Students will spend 45-minutes with their advisory class to finish the school day, recapping what they have learned during the assemblies and making goals for the semester.

At LGA, it is important that we help students keep focused on their goals. Our longer academic day affords us opportunities such as these to help students remember why they are at LGA, and what they want to accomplish. We hope to start the semester off with excitement for what has already been accomplished, and determination to continue on the path of achievement.

LGA Families,

It has been an amazing start for LGA! As we enter into the Thanksgiving break, we as a staff wanted to let all of our families know how thankful we are that you have trusted us with your student’s education. We take that trust seriously, and are continuing to prepare for the journey that will take us to being a 7th through 12th grade campus. It is unreal to think that the end of first semester is upon us.

We hope that your families are able to enjoy time together this next week. We also wanted to share with a you a few events that are coming up in the Natomas area over the next several weeks. Take a moment to view each of the flyers below, and we hope this is a wonderful holiday season for you and your loved ones!

As we prepared for the opening of LGA, our staff spent a great deal of time in the spring and summer talking about who we wanted to become collectively. We asked ourselves what we wanted students to walk away with when they graduate from LGA. Not only do we want students to have academic understanding, but we want them to walk away with skills and abilities that will enable them to be successful in a career and in college. We also asked ourselves what we felt we should live by as educators.

Through all of our discussions, we were able to narrow down the myriad goals to eight principles we all would agree to live by every day. We also agreed that our students should live by these principles in their daily school life. And, as the year progressed, we would continuously talk to our students about these principles through daily interactions. In fact, during advisory, activities that students are participating in are focused on these eight principles.

The image that you see at the bottom of the page is a poster that will be up in every classroom, office and student space at school. We will also have posters available for students if they want to take one home as a reminder while they are working on homework, or getting ready for school each day.

Thank you for being our allies as we encourage our students to understand their own significance and the impact they can have on this world both by their education, and by how they choose to live their lives.

A Note from the Superintendent

I hope everyone had a wonderful, restful 3-day weekend, and Happy Labor Day! Our students and staff are really getting into the swing of things now as we have been in school for three weeks. It has been so enjoyable to get out in the classrooms and watch our teachers helping students be successful. Please read this letter, (Spanish version here) sent by our superintendent and myself. It speaks of our commitment to supporting teachers and students, and to being in classrooms on a consistent basis.

We look forward to meeting all families and want to make sure that your questions are answered and needs met. Please don’t hesitate to contact our front office to schedule a time we can meet!

$10,000 Grant!

Hello LGA Families,

On Wednesday, August 22nd, voting will begin for an exciting contest. Raley’s is offering $10,000 to the school that can generate the most votes in their area. Last year Heron School won for the Sacramento area, and this year we want it to be Leroy Greene. We need your help to make this happen, every vote counts and competition is fierce. We are going to try and get the support of our local Natomas media outlets and our City Council member too, as they are always eager to help our schools.

Everyone can vote once per day, so tell your friends and family members to sign up as well and make sure they vote every day for LGA!
